The Good
Mansion of Hidden Souls (1993) is an original, first-person perspective graphic adventure somewhat similar to other computer titles such as "D", "Myst" and "7th Guest". The pre-rendered, polygon graphics are impressive, albeit not full screen, given the hardware limitations of the Sega CD, and the supernatural storyline is engaging without being too scary.
The Bad
The graphics are impressive, but you are generally not permitted to look closely at or otherwise interact with anything beyond the very specific puzzles. Nor do you have much freedom to explore any of the rooms. The music and sound effects are eerily, but the game is too tame to be classified as survival horror. The dialogue is often cheesy and most gamers will probably be able to solve all the puzzles within two hours.
The Bottom Line
Mansion of Hidden Souls (1993) pushes the hardware limitations of the Sega CD with its impressive pre-rendered, polygon graphics and provides an atmosphere that is eerily without being too scary. Sega CD owners who enjoy graphic adventure gaming will enjoy the, all too short, ride.
