Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Description official descriptions
MK: SM is a 3D platforming adventure beat-em-up that is based in the Mortal Kombat world. The story begins just after the first tournament, and fills in some of the backgrounds of various characters in the series. Fighting across several areas of Earthrealm, Netherrealm, and Outworld, this game follows Liu Kang and Kung Lao (the Shaolin Monks) as they thwart another invasion of Earth. MK: SM features a wide cast of recognizable characters, many secret unlockables, as well being able to play through with a friend in Ko-op mode.
The combat is fast-paced, with numerous ways to dispose of enemies, including MK signature moves and Fatalities. This kombat goes beyond what you have seen in the fighting games, among the upgrades are: The series first Multi-Directional Kombat System, Multalities (kill multiple opponents with one move), Brutalities (see red as you unleash brutal force), ko-op only team-attacks, and even character progression (earn experience to spend on upgrades to moves). The backgrounds, all based on MK and MK II arenas, come to life with numerous hazards for the Monks that they can turn on their enemies.

Mindless Ultra-violent Beat'em Up? That's my kind of game!
The Good
It's quick, fun, easy and very violent.
You can use a wide variety of attacks, combos, special moves and, of course, fatality moves.
Animation is smooth, load times are way faster than the PS2 version.
It's a game a la "God of War" or "Ninja Gaiden": your mission is to kick ass, a large amount of asses, with your bare hands. Or with weapons, that make you a lot more deadlier.
There's blood, kicks, disembowelment, action... even hot chicks.
The Bad
Boss fights can be tricky, specially the last one.
The graphics are exactly the same of the PS2 version, no improvement here.
There is some glitch with the volume of the music, voices and effects, causing sometimes complete silence, or a loud speak.
Other glitches include falling outside of the world.
The story is simply hilarious. Ludicrous. I laughed out loud with it. It's only a excuse for the game to take place.
And it's very short: you can skip a lot of fights.
The Bottom Line
It's the kind of game you can enjoy to release some stress.
As I said above, it's a lot like "Ninja Gaiden", though much easier, and like "God of War", though much tougher: you just can't win by smashing the buttons, you have to block, jump and flee sometimes.
Although short, it's fun and enjoyable.

Trivia
Development
The game was originally a single-player game featuring Raiden as the only playable character.
German version
In the German version, all fatalities and the blood during the intro cutscene were removed.
Johnny Cage
This is the first Mortal Kombat game that allows Johnny Cage to perform his ball breaker move on female fighters (not counting the Shang Tsung's morph glitch).
References to the game
A rendered cutscene of the game is shown briefly in the 2009 movie Crank: High Voltage.
Unlockable arcade game
You can unlock the arcade version of Mortal Kombat II by completing five hidden quests with Smoke. It is not completely the original coin-op version, but rather the port that shipped with Midway Arcade Treasures 2, which has minor differences. This only works on the Xbox version and the NTSC PS2 version. On the PAL PS2 version you instead get 50.000 experience points.
