Battle Fleet (DOS)
A likeable option if you don´t have a human player at hand.
The Good
Battle Fleet is a nicely done alternative to the real board game if you are alone or don´t have the game (or paper and pencils) at hand but would like to enjoy a quick round of Battleship. It simulates the plain game without adding additional elements of a real sea battle like some other variants to. The screen consists of the playground which resembles the folding plastic box most versions are built like. It even has some small pockets for the red and white pins that indicate hits and misses although it would have been an even nicer touch if you would actually see some of them lying in them. Although the ships are not very detailed they appear very adorable since they also look like the authentic little plastic ships most boxed variants of the board game contain. The game itself is a pretty standard simulation of regular match of two players which play in turns until one of them manages to sink the enemy fleet completely.
The Bad
At first it can feel a bit uncomfortable to play this game only by keyboard, since the mouse is not supported, especially when you first place your warships with a combination of numbers and letters, but later you get used to it.
Also the sound can become a bit annoying with the ongoing repeating of the same shrill sounds of your shots missed or hitting something with the only exception of a short melody when a match ends but this can of course be "solved" by turning the sound down or completely off.
Also i didn´t like the decision to make the smallest ship, the patrol boat, only one square large. This can become pretty annoying especially when it is the latest enemy ship you are hunting for which can take quite some time since it could literally be everywhere.
The Bottom Line
Battleship, the board game this is based on, is a two player game where every player tries to find all of his opponents ships, which were placed by him somewhere on his playfield, before he does. Battle Fleet does a good job at simulating the feeling of playing a quick match of this classic board game.
