Description official description

A short while after the end of the American Civil War and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, President Ulysses S. Grant receives death threats from someone who claims to be the true murderer of the former president. Grant sends his two best agents, Jim West and Artemus Gordon, to investigate the mystery and prevent the unknown killer from repeating the bloody act.

Wild Wild West: The Steel Assassin is based on the TV series of the same name. The game puts the player into the roles of West and Gordon, alternating between them in different chapters. Gameplay style changes accordingly: Gordon's segments are puzzle-solving adventure that relies on inventory items and logic puzzles, while West's portions contain action shooter sequences. The player can choose the order of the chapters before the final one, where it is necessary to frequently alternate between the two to complete the game.

A not-so-good mix of action with adventure

The Good
The feeling of Steel Assassin reminded me of a Sherlock Holmes mystery, only with a western theme, of course. But since Holmes never had to shoot it out with the bad guys, that was the only similarity.

Playing in 1st person sometimes and in 3rd person at other times was somewhat interesting. Switching between characters gave a good twist to the story too. The adventure puzzles were creative and fun.

The graphics during the adventure segments were pretty good, but during the action sequences they changed and looked more blocky and pixelated. The musical theme of the television show and was not especially different or worth noting.

The Bad
I haven’t seen the movie on which this game was supposedly based, but I’m a big fan of the original television show. Instead of using the movie’s actors, I wish they had used the original Jim West and Artemus Gordon from the tv series.

I had a lot of fun with the beginning adventure elements, but quit playing when I got through the first shoot out. While aiming and shooting were okay, I wasn’t given any opportunity to practice and so I was terribly inept at it. Darting behind wagons and bushes was not as easy as it should have been either. Actually, the action portions of the game (at least in the beginning) seemed out of place.

The Bottom Line
If you’re in the mood for a western, and you don’t mind action mixed with adventure, you might enjoy this game. I personally didn’t find it interesting enough to finish.
