Description

In the future, Earth's temperature rises and melts the polar ice caps, and Earth lies under a watery grave. Years later, survivors of this disaster live on boats or man-made islands called Atolls. Everyone in this new world is looking for a mythical place called Dry Land, which people believe that there is a map to Dry Land on a little girl's back named Enola. A band of pirates who live an oil tanker called the Smokers are after Dry Land and they are trying to get Enola for the tattoo on her back. A nameless drifter who has adapted to the new world and this causes him to have gills and webbed feet, gets involved in this whole "quest for Dry Land" so to speak and becomes responsible for Enola and the woman who looks after her named Helen.

You play as the nameless drifter only known as The Mariner. You play through three types of gameplay. The first type of gameplay involves you sailing in a somewhat big area and clearing the area of Smokers. There is a second type of these sailing levels add something else. You can save the Atollers from The Smokers. The second type of gameplay is the swimming. You swim underwater avoiding sea creatures and collecting items for money to use at the shop after you kill off Smokers on the Atolls. Killing of The Smokers is the third type of gameplay. You run through the Atolls with your big knife at first and then you get three more weapons along the way which are a pistol, a speargun, and a machine gun.

A decent movie based game from Ocean.

The Good
Waterworld SNES is a game based on the 1995 film of the same name, Starring Kevin Costner. The film itself is imfamous for it's gigantic budget, and although it was financially successful upon released, it disappointed critics.

The gameplay has some variety, consisting of 4 level sections.

1: You manouever the Trimaran, and must shoot down all the Smokers in the playing field.

2: You play as the Marnier, and must swim around underwater collecting treasures and soil, in exchange for credits.

3: Same as 1, except you are now near an atoll and must prevent the smokers from kidnapping the atollers. You get credits for every hostage you save, and every atoller left.

4: A third person shooter, with the same premise: you must eliminate all the smokers.

The graphics in this game are decent, with the characters and the Trimaran well animated. The underwater scenes are very well rendered. The sound effects do their job and nothing else, whilst the music is worth listening to.

The Bad
There is not much to dislike about the game, except for the fact that the gameplay can become monotonous. Fortunately there is a password system implemented in the game.

The Bottom Line
In short, this is a fairly decent game, worth checking out.

Trivia

Genesis version

A Genesis version developed by Data Design Interactive was meant to be released and was even reviewed in EGM, but it was cancelled. A prototype version of the almost completed cartridge can be found on the Internet.

Music

According to Dean Evans, the composer, several of the music tracks were made for Green Lantern, a game that was cancelled by Ocean staff. The timed underwater diving section music was not written for the game, as it originally was to test the features of the music editor the music was made on. Evans later extended the track so it would fit the timed underwater diving sections in the game.
