Mystic Defender
Description
Mystic Defender is a side-scrolling platform game. It is the sequel to SpellCaster for the Sega Master System. However, in this sequel the RPG elements have been omitted in favour of side-scrolling platform gameplay.
In this game you play Joe Yamata (Kujaku) on a quest to rescue Alexandra from the villainous Zao, who is using her soul to resurrect his master Zareth in Azuchi castle. You have four types of magic to attack with and you can charge your blasts as well as change the magic type mid-game.

Very good side-scrolling platformer.
The Good
Mystic defender was a wonderful side-scrolling platform game with great graphics and music. It was also somewhat unconventional and used a different sprite in the Japanese release than the American.
The backgrounds and characters are very detailed and the plot, while simple, is interesting. There are also an interesting variety of weapons and the control is good.
Unfortunately, this game has been all but forgotten.
The Bad
This game is bit difficult. It took me until 1991 to reach the last level and I purchased it in 1989. There are several areas where the control, while normally decent, is not adequate. There was also no game save feature so if you spent five hours reaching level 7 and had to go work you were screwed.
The Bottom Line
Fun platform game. Too difficult for younger players. It will frustrate them. Its the sequal to Spellcaster for the Sega Master System which is somewhat different and involved RPG elements.
Some other good platform games are Shadow Dancer, Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi 3, and Ghouls'N Ghosts.

Trivia
Censored
In the original release of this game there was nudity at the end. When you save the princess she is stark naked. This was discovered by angry parents and SEGA made a second version with exactly the same package in which the princess at the end of the game is wearing clothes.
Japanese version
In America the main character sprite is wearing pants in the US version but in the Japanese version he is wearing a ceremonial dress. Interestingly enough, both sprites were programmed into the American cartridge so if you put it in a Japanese system the character would have the ceremonial dress and if you put the same cart in the American system he would have pants and short hair.
