Clyde's Adventure

Description

Clyde's Adventure is a platform game. The objective is to travel through each of the castles, collect the special treasure, all of the gems and find the exit. There are no enemies although there are a large number of traps, switches and teleporters to complicate things.

There are two chapters to the game, each containing 16 castles. Part one ("The Lost Treasure of Tahookaboo") is shareware, while part two ("The Vanished King") is only available on registration (which appears to be no longer possible).

Good, quirky puzzle sidescroller

The Good
32 levels with plenty of instant-death traps and hazards. As Clyde, you must collect the treasure and all the gems in each level to clear it. There are no enemies; only hazards. Clyde dies immediately to most hazards. He also has an energy meter that depletes when walking, falling, or touching a moving spike.

What makes it fun is that many of the hint scrolls along the way are humorous and poke fun at the player. In addition, the game is fast-paced, and each level takes less than three minutes to complete... if you know the correct route. Instant deaths never become an issue of working so hard to get to the end, only to die unfairly. If a certain level is frustrating you, you can come back later to complete it, as levels are unlocked three at a time.

Music is catchy enough that you'll be humming some of the tunes after you've played the game.

The Bad
The main challenge is that you won't clear most of the castles on the first try. Some people won't like all the instant death traps and hidden teleports, but for others, that's all part of the fun.

As this game is of above-average difficulty, don't expect it to be a walk in the park!

The Bottom Line
Give it a try! It's not for everyone, but it has enough good points to stand the test of time. It's far superior to Clyde's Revenge, which was a terrible excuse for a sequel.

I enjoyed episode 1 of Clyde's Adventure so much, I purchased the registered copy in 1995 for $30. Now you can get both episodes for free because the author has made it freeware.
