A fun, naughty twist on a classic board game format.
The Good
Centrefold Squares sounds simple on paper, and it is: choose a girl you want to see naked, then play a series of rounds of a Reversi-style board game in which you're attempting to claim a certain number of chips (rather than the entire board) as well as outscore your opponent using special squares. It's simple to pick up and tricky to master -- and the varied range of opponents, each of whom has their own skill level (and a decent quality digitised pic), means there's a decent amount of longevity to the game as a whole.
The Bad
Sound is rather underwhelming, being limited to a not-very-good tune on the title screen and a few beeps and burbles during gameplay. It might have been nice to have a bit more music, or perhaps some digitised sound -- a bit of sampled girly giggling a la Teenage Queen wouldn't have gone amiss, for example.
It's also a shame that you can't independently pick your opponent and difficulty level -- so if you want to see the pics for certain opponents, you'll have to beat the harder-level gameplay!
The Bottom Line
Centrefold Squares is a simple, straightforward adult game in which your strategic skill is rewarded with nudey pics. You should know exactly what you're getting into going into this, and it provides exactly what it promises. However, what you might find after a game or two is that Centrefold Squares' distinctive twist on the Reversi formula is actually surprisingly compelling and addictive in its own right -- with the "reveal a picture" mechanic providing a nice sense of structure to a full play session.
Did it "need" to be an adult game? No; the pictures you reveal could have been anything. But it is an adult game -- and compared to other examples of adult titles from the '80s, this is a solid and enjoyable one that is tasteful and classy rather than brashly offensive.
