Superman
Dicey play control may do what Darkseid couldn't: Vanquish the Man of Steel.
Based on the DC Comics/Kids WB animated series, the game's backstory has Lex Luthor trapping Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Professor Emil Hamilton in a fogbound virtual world. All-American hero that he is, the Man of Steel flies to the rescue in seven major missions that take him from the streets of Metropolis to Braniac's space ship.
Other missions take place in a warehouse, Lexcorp HQ, a parking garage, the professor's S.T.A.R. labs and the Metropolis subway. If you get stumped, we have a strategy guide to all the missions, plus a directory of all items and frequently asked questions.
Before every major mission, you'll have to fly through portals, or airborne hoops, and execute a straightforward task, such as rescuing pedestrians from runaway cars. The major missions are much more complex, involving multiple tasks and objectives. In the Dam, for example, you'll have to find a couple of access codes, drain a canal and chill time-bombs with Superman's freeze breath (Up C).
Superman's other abilities include heat vision and X-ray vision. Of course he can fly, though never very fast, throw punches and pick up and throw objects.
Multiplayer Modes
In Fight mode, as many as four players can take control of tiny aircraft that look like Jet Skis with wings. You can play as Superman or archvillans Braniac, Mala, Darkseid or Metallo. (Don't ask us why Superman needs an airplane.) As in Forsaken 64, players roam around, snag weapons and power-ups and try to blast each other. No one can really die, certainly not Superman, so the goal is to have the most energy when time expires. There's also a Multiplayer Race, but the two modes are virtually identical. A nice option allows you to split the screen horizontally or vertically.
The graphics faithfully capture the look and feel of the animated series, with plenty of steep angles and Art Deco-ish skyscrapers receding into the distance. However, liberal use of fog and choppy frame rates will remind players of first-generation N64 games.
Kryptonite Kontrol?
The guy may be a superhero, but controlling him often feels like flying a bathtub. Older players may show patience with squirrelly control, but younger players are much more likely to give up on a game. So it's especially unfortunate that Titus has taken this Grade-A youth-oriented license and given it a decent visual sheen but neglected to fine-tune the control.
