ELECTRONIC ARTS SHIPS TRIPLE PLAY 98 FOR PLAYSTATION AND PC-CD
Market Leading Baseball Title Brings On the Heat with a New 3D Game Engine, Enhanced AI, Deep Statistics and First Ever Two-Man Broadcast Booth
SAN MATEO, Calif., June 19, 1997 -- Electronic Arts’ (Nasdaq:ERTS), a leading global interactive entertainment software company, announced the shipment of Triple Play 98 for the PlayStation’ and PC-CD. The game features a new 3-D game engine with polygonal players, enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) delivering deeper strategy, and the first baseball video game with two-man play-by-play and color commentary. The suggested retail price for Triple Play 98 is $49.99.
Triple Play 98's new real-time rendered game engine features motion captured polygon players. Each batter's and pitcher's signature styles are accurately recreated using the motion capture technique that portrays smooth, realistic swings and incredibly fluid pitching motions. Remarkable animations are featured throughout every game, including hard-nosed runners going head-first into second base, aggressive fielders diving for balls, players who occasionally collide while hustling for a pop-up, and even outfielders who can climb the outfield wall to snag a ball from going over the fence. The players' physical attributes are even in the game such as height, weight, skin tone, hair color and facial hair.
To enhance the baseball atmosphere further, Triple Play 98 features the first ever two-man play-by-play and color commentary team with Jim Hughson and Buck Martinez. Over 10,000 phrases of baseball commentary are included in the game. Over 20 different camera views, including TV-mode and replay views, allow players to zoom in on a crucial steal at second base or use a wide angle to check out the action at every position on the field. Players who love baseball's power game can also swing for the fences in Triple Play 98's Home Run Derby’ mode.
Triple Play 98 delivers enhanced AI including "team intelligence" where each team manager manages the club as they do in real life. The game also has "crowd intelligence" where crowd size and the energy level depends on the teams' performance during the season. If a game is a blowout, then you will see the stadium start to empty out. If a team is having a bad season overall, the stands will be sparsely filled with fans.
"I was thrilled to join the EA SPORTS’ team this year to be associated with Triple Play 98," said Brian Jordan of the St. Louis Cardinals. "A lot of guys on the team are big video game players and we spent a lot of time on the road playing last year's version of Triple Play as well as other EA SPORTS games. We can't wait to add Triple Play 98 to the lineup. The new technology in Triple Play 98 makes the game look and play more realistically than any other baseball game I've ever seen."
"Triple Play 98 is the best baseball game ever made by EA SPORTS and this was no easy task since last year's version was touted as the champion in its category with more than 40 percent of the marketshare," said Chuck Osieja, producer of Triple Play 98. "Baseball purists and gaming enthusiasts alike will be blown away by the combination of the 3-D rendered environment, realistic-looking players, a variety of camera views, all the Major League Baseball teams, players and deep stats to satisfy the hard-core baseball gaming consumer. There is no doubt that Triple Play 98 will set new benchmarks for interactive baseball games this year."
The combination of the Major League Baseball’ (MLB) license and Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) license makes Triple Play 98 the most authentic baseball title for the casual and die-hard baseball fan. All 30 Major League baseball stadiums, including Bank One Ball Park, Tropicana Field and Turner Field, are beautifully recreated in a 3-D presentation to give game players the ultimate experience of playing in the big leagues. Providing further baseball depth, the MLBPA license gives Triple Play 98 over 700 big league players, the 1997 opening day rosters and updated 1996 season statistics from STATS, Inc.’ Triple Play 98's deep statistical tracking will satisfy the most hard-core baseball fan. Players can track and analyze up to 50 categories of stats in this year's version.
Some additional features include hundreds of baseball trivia facts that appear on the screen during load time. Triple Play 98 features a variety of multiplayer modes that will challenge even the finest of baseball players. The PlayStation version allows for up to eight players to hook up and and slug it out and the PC-CD version supports LAN and modem play.
