''Game Dev Tycoon'' is a business simulator game where you control a game company. The game starts in the garage as many single video games developer did in the 80s. As you release successful games, more genres, employees and options are unlocked. As time progresses consoles and home computers are unlocked, but often using silly fictional names like PlaySystem and grPhone. The game is inspired by Game Dev Story in both name and gameplay.

Trivia
Pirate release
A torrent release on the popular piracy website The Pirate Bay turned out to be uploaded by the game's developers themselves. It initially seems identical to the standard release, but after a while, the game shows a window with the following message:

Boss, it seems that while many players play our new game, they steal it by downloading a cracked version rather than buying it legally. If players don’t buy the games they like, we will sooner or later go bankrupt.
The player's company would then end up in bankruptcy. This alteration was present only in the aforementioned version, while releases on legal storefronts did not have it.
