More Arcade Games
Windows version
Boring interface, quite interesting content, not a keeper
The Good
This is an interesting collection of shareware games. The quality of the games is variable but that is to be expected in a shareware compilation but what I liked was the variety. Some compilations I've encountered pad their content with endless variants of Space Invaders or PacMac, not so this product. While some games are clones that share the same parent there aren't enough to cause irritation.
When I looked at the games in depth I was surprised that so many of them were developed for Windows 3.1, or earlier, but I was able to play a lot of them directly from the CD using a Windows 98 machine and many also played under Windows XP. Some even played under Windows 7 but others crashed the machine
The Bad
Windows 98 is one of the operating systems specified on the keep case cover. I have tried all the games under this o/s and a few of them did not run. This could be due to the way my system is set up or it could be that related to the games being developed for a Win 3.1 environment
Some compilations have a decent menu, ISV's 10 Tons Of Games for example groups games by type, gives a description, allows the user to play or install and so on. Here the menu is grey, basic, boring, and contains no information at all. No effort has been spent to make it look the least bit interesting or useful.
The Bottom Line
As someone who likes to find, play and submit old shareware games to this database I found this compilation to be a bit of a gem, being able to play the games from the CD is a bonus because it means less tidying up. However even I would say that while these games are of interest there's nothing here that I would keep and play over and over again.
Had I bought this to keep my kids amused then, even back in 2001, I think I would have been disappointed. The games are too simple, look too dated, and enough gave me problems in WIN 98 environment for me to know that I'd have been frustrated with the cries of 'Daaaaad! It doesn't work properly?'
