Flamebreak
Description official description
Flamebreak is a twin-stick action game set in small arenas where melee and ranged combat is combined. At the start of the game the player chooses a randomized character. There are different options for races, weapons, skills and items used to generate them. Many of the options are unlocked by progressing through the game, combined with a permanent spirit level system, adding them into the mix for next runs. Other typical roguelike elements are permadeath, procedural generation, randomized level paths, environments and enemies, random skills, upgrades and items etc.
The character can be moved in any direction and uses a main weapon, either for melee or ranged combat. In addition three other attacks or abilities are available, selected at random from a pool. These can also be used at any moment, but have a cooldown period. Examples include a swinging attack, a zombie bite, summoning support characters, sending out a shockwave, stunning enemies, dropping explosive, homing robots and so on. A single run consists of several levels, grouped in environments, that need to be completed. The player can choose the path through the levels, leading up to a boss. Next to regular encounters there are more difficult ones, shops where the gold earned in battles can be spent on health, items, weapons and upgrades, wise men with skill upgrades, jewelers where powerful sets can be collected, locations where treasure needs to be defended, mini-bosses and so on. To prevent the player from visiting all possible locations to gather as much as possible, a shadow soon starts to occupy the level path. Locations covered by shadow can still be completed, but no longer yield gold, so progressing at a steady pace is rewarded.
Next to the regular game mode, choosing between three characters, there is a custom mode, a hard mode, and a quest challenge mode. The game's story tells how demigods betrayed their creator and he now needs to be avenged. These demigods are then encountered in successive runs as the final boss. The relationship with the demigods can be influenced through a favour system. In certain levels you can choose to defend or destroy their statues.
