Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey
Description
Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey is a turn-based game with RPG elements set in a fantasy environment where Grimm, a grim reaper, needs to defeat enemies by spelling words. The gameplay is similar to Bookworm Adventures. The game is shown from a third-person side view and the character and enemy take turns to attack each other. There is a letter grid at the bottom of the screen to spell words. When a correct word of at least three letters is made, it is turned into an attack and new letters appear to replace the ones that were used. The game consists of a series of locations accessible through a map. Each location is split up into four events: three with a gold star and one with a platinum star. As soon as one gold star event is completed, a next location is opened up. To access the platinum star event all gold star challenges of the location need to be completed. Platinum star events often have harder, elite enemies and a time limit, but with a large reward.
Next to spelling words, a large amount of role-playing elements come into play. By progressing through the game and defeating enemies gems are earned. This currency can be converted into upgrades and purchases in several shops. There are upgrades for health, damage and armour. Equipping books offers additional perks such as more health or more damage. There are potions that can be activated during the game to restore health. Special items offer a preview of the enemy's health bar or your own prior to an attack, the main reaper weapon can be upgraded several times, there are new tile layouts for the letters and additional characters can be unlocked. Stages often consist of several enemies that need to be defeated in succession. Often a shopkeeper appears to sell potions.
While fighting there are various effects for the letters. Each letter has a different value (bronze, silver of gold) that determines the damage and longer words always provide more damage. Some enemies are only affected by a minimum word length, letters taken from a specific row or column or letters from the corners of the grid. They can also introduce effects such as a shield for the main character, poison tiles that deal damage when they are used, whirlwind letters that change every turn, plague letters that slowly infect the entire grid, etc. It is possible to replace all letters by new ones, but this skips a turn and allows the enemy to attack. There are also stone tiles (cannot be used for some time). Enemies are sometimes able to heal themselves and can deal critical attacks. Some stages have a separate, optional event where you need to guess a long word with a limited amount of guesses by selecting letters from the alphabet.
There are several quests that are played in the background for additional rewards, for instance for using specific types of tiles or a specific letter or word length. The game also contains several comic books where the pages can be unlocked gradually. Unlike the commercial PC version the mobile version is free-to-play with in-app purchases for additional gems. There are 40 stages in total, sometimes with a separate path for harder levels, over 30 monsters and 70 quests.
