Description official description

Total War: Attila is an entry in the long-running Total War grand strategy games and it largely expands upon the mechanics of Total War: Rome II. The game is set in 395 AD at the moment the Late Antiquity transitions into the early Dark Ages. The titular Attila is not in power at the start of the campaign, but will become the leader of the Huns. The main game modes are a prologue that acts as a tutorial, the single-player grand campaign and the multiplayer campaign. The game contains sixteen playable factions of 56 in total (ten by default, additional ones through DLC that also includes new territory and narrative), divided over six types of cultures with their own starting location: Barbarian Kingdom, Eastern Empires, Great Migrators, Nomadic Tribes, Norsemen and Roman Empire. Each faction has a leader, a religion, a cultural trait and a faction trait. There are also multiple difficulty levels to choose from. Each faction consists of a family tree with multiple characters that can hold different roles such as war chief, high judge etc. Characters have statistics such as authority, cunning and zeal, traits and multiple skills that can be developed through a tree. Some factions start without a capital or a region and others do no start as a horde, and can either form one or never become one.

Rather than pure management, most of the objectives, often divided over different chapters, focus on survival through the harsh conditions and expansion. Three regions are grouped as a province with a capital and each region can be conquered separately. The environment covers Bactria to Lusitania and from Caledonia to Garamantia in the Sahara. As usual politics and diplomacy plays an important role, also to prevent internal disputes and to maintain influence. Players can focus on military, economic or cultural influence to thrive. Typical for the series the gameplay is divided between turn-based overall management through a world map and real-time 3D battles that can also be simulated. Next to military management each faction has access to a specific technology tree for battles.

In multiplayer the campaign can be played head-to-head or cooperatively.
