Naval Ops: Warship Gunner
Description
Naval Ops: Warship Gunner is a single player, naval game that combines strategy and shooting elements.
The player takes command of a warship which, for plot reasons, encountered some kind of electrical storm that flipped the ship into an alternate reality. On arrival the ship is immediately attacked by the forces of the Empire. From there on the player sides with the Freedom Forces and helps lead the battle against the Empire and its superships.
There are two kinds of game available. From the main menu the player can start a new game or they can select a WWII option. In the 'normal' game the player can invest in technology and use this to build new ships, in WWII mode the game is played with World War II ships from either the USA, Japan, England or Germany and is limited to the technology of the period.
The game consists of three areas of battle, each area has ten stages and the player must complete one stage before they can progress to the next. Each stage starts in the dock, this is where the ship is equipped with new armament, weapons and so-on, alternatively the player can scrap their ship and use the parts and the cash they have to design and build another to their own design.
Once the re-fit is complete the mission begins and the game makes success / failure really easy to understand - Complete the objective and escape and it's a successful mission, sink and it's not. Once the mission is over there's a battle report to review and it's on to the next mission.
Ships are not limited to battleships with big guns, there are aircraft carriers too. Ships can be repaired while afloat and power-ups can be picked up by sailing over them.
Completing the game unlocks a Survival Mode in which the player selects a class of ship and stays with that unmodified ship throughout a replay of the game.

The Good
It was original. The whole series was grippingly amazing. I built ships for specific levels and specific tasks. I had a twin hulled battleship with a single rail gun and ba-zillions of anti-aircraft machines guns for one level that was heavily defended by aircraft. It worked great.
The Bad
My only problem with this game is that I like it so much that it irritates that they are not making more. I've worn out one PS2 playing this game and had to find another at a pawnshop.
The Bottom Line
Pure excitement. First you build your ship then you try to survive the battle in it. And you are going to get sunk. So you take what you've learned and build a better ship. And it ramps up at each level. If you are ven mildly interested in war ships this is the game to play.
