Description official description

In the game Charlie the Chef has to bake a cake, but the ingredients (Mixed Peel, Chunky Chocolate, Crafty Cheese, Sneaky Sugar and Colonel Custard) are trying to escape from the pantry.

To bake the cake, Charlie has to mix ten ingredients in the cake by knocking them out with a flour bag and into the mixing bowl. To complicate things, he also has to watch out for what goes into the mix, as the bin monster sends a whole lot of garbage flying from the surrounding dustbins, that can end up in the mix as well to spoil the cake. Not to mention that he also needs to make sure the ingredients don't accidentally end up in the trash.

Every time a inedible ingredient is mixed in, Charlie has to add an extra edible ingredient to compensate. Once the mix is finished, the dough rises and a new level starts with a new type of ingredient from a different drawer of the pantry.

Refreshing early genre example

The Good
It has good graphics and is a fun game to try and punt cookies into the milk bowl. It reminds me of football, or tennis.

The Bad
I can't fault it for much

The Bottom Line
Great representative of the imagination on and creativity found in games written in the early years of the Spectrum

Trivia

Cancelled versions

  • The well known C64 musician Martin Galway begun to code a port to C64, but didn't finish it. Taken from GTW64 - "The code that was recovered from Martin’s work disks shows an early preview where you can control the main character and there are some enemies running around. It is not playable however apart from just being able to control the enemy."
  • There is a unreleased version for the BBC Micro. From the site GTW64 - "Cookies existence on the BBC Micro was to be something of a shock to many people, especially Stairway To Hell (http://www.stairwaytohell.com), who were recovering lost BBC Micro titles through their website. Regular contributor to Stairway To Hell, Dick Greening caused shockwaves by contributing the previously unreleased (and complete!) disk image of Cookie. The game has converted extremely well, with the additional use of colour to enhance graphics on the Beeb. Gameplay is left untouched, featuring play ability that matches its spectrum counterpart. Not only is the game finding significant, but there are also unheard musical delights composed by none other than Martin Galway; a find in itself. Great renditions of Food Glorious Food and other jingles add to what is a fantastic conversion."
