Bomberman Generation

Moby ID: 6651

Explosive Adventure

It is the cosmic year 200X and the notorious Hige Hige Bandits have scattered six powerful Bomb Elements throughout six worlds. Bomberman must find all six elements to prevent the evil gang from doing very naughty things.

Each world presents its own unique challenge. In Octo Ocean, you use underwater currents to explore caves and sunken pirate ships. In Tentasia, you can bomb trees to create a makeshift bridge or hop in tree stumps to be magically transported to another location. Professor Ein will give advice from the safety of his research laboratory while you do the legwork.

Within each world, you will find six numbered levels that must be completed in sequence. You'll want to play through each level multiple times in order to find all secrets. Unfortunately, no mapping system has been included, so when you return to a level you will have to dig into your memory banks to recall curious spots.

Back to Bomb-Basics

As with past Bomberman games, the basic idea is to bomb your way through worlds populated by all kinds of enemies and obstacles. In Bomberman Generation, developer Hudson has preserved the balance of explosive action and brain-exploding puzzles that fans love.

Using Bomberman's abilities, you can throw or kick bombs in any direction. Enemies won't sit and wait for the bombs to detonate, so you must use good timing and clever placement of your bombs to trap your enemies.

Da Bomb of Multiplayer Games

Bomberman has always been one of the great multiplayer franchises. Bomberman Generation carries on that great tradition with Battle Games for two, three or four players that are guaranteed to give your and your friends plenty o' opportunities for trash-talking fun.

The Standard Battle is essentially a survival match on any of eight battlefields. You get one life and unlimited bombs to destroy your enemies.

Variations on this classic mode include Reversi, which lets you use bombs to mark your territory; Coin Battle, in which the player who collects the most coins wins; and Dodge Battle, in which you must stay alive as bombs are dropped onto the field. Slightly different is Revenge Battle, in which you toss bombs from the perimeter to destroy moles.

Each mode allows as many as four players to compete head-to-head.

Talkin' 'bout My Generation

While staying true to its roots, Bomberman Generations also includes several additions that make it more than a nostalgia trip.

Pets Go Boom

In a twist on the monster-breeding craze, you can find and capture helpful creatures called Charboms. Each of the Charboms is associated with Water, Fire, Electricity or Star.

During battle you simply choose a Charbom then select a battle strategy from a list. Because each element has its own strengths and weaknesses, choosing the right Charbom is important to victory.

When a Charbom is equipped, you can collect items to increase its powers. Each creature will also grant you a special ability. For example, Andlar the fish lets you control the distance you toss your bombs and Ligon the lion will max out your bomb stockpile.

To capture a Charbom, you must locate and enter special portals, then defeat it in battle.

Enhanced Explosions

In addition to raising mini-monsters, you can create special Attribute Bombs. You must first find a special Bomb Merge item, then combine it with your regular Fire Bombs. The resulting special bombs are useful for solving certain puzzles. For example, the Ice Bomb can freeze water and the Water Bomb can put out fires.

Cel Pell-mell

Using the power of the Nintendo GameCube, Bomberman Generation introduces a brand-new graphical style to the series. The Bomberman universe really comes to life using a bright and colorful cel-shading technique.

Cel-shading uses outlines and comic book shading to make 3D characters appear flat like a cartoon. The overall look is consistently sharp and fun to look. Both newcomers and longtime fans of the series should get a kick out of Bomberman's new look.

In addition to good graphics, Bomberman Generation offers solid sound. Voice acting -- a first for the Bomberman series -- contributes mightily to each character. And the sound effects and music successfully capture the feel of each world.

To save your progress you will need a Memory Card with at least three free blocks.

Fusin' Fun

A game with more explosions than Hong Kong during Chinese New Year, Bomberman Generation does a great job ushering Bomberman into the next generation. Longtime fans of the series will love the multiplayer support and first-time players will be hooked from the start. Only a hardcore cynic could dislike the cheery cel-shaded graphics.
