Shantae is the name of a feisty half-genie who stars in Capcom's latest handheld offering. It's also the name of game which you should not miss playing. What makes it so good? Great graphics, solid play control and the developers' obvious commitment to create a game with real depth. Shantae may seem like an unlikely title to garner such praise, but this purple-ponytailed newcomer is for real.
Shantae is an action/adventure game designed for Game Boy Color. The graphics will be spruced up if you play it on Game Boy Advance, and in fact it outshines most other action games designed specifically for GBA.
Though only a half-genie, Shantae is nevertheless hired to be the official genie of Scuttle Town. As such, it is her responsibility to protect the town's citizens from all sorts of danger. When a sassy lady pirate named Risky Boots attacks the town and steals a prized steam engine, it's up to Shantae to prove that she can save the day just as well as any full-blooded genie.
Shantae uses her ponytail to whip her enemies into submission, and she can also use special Dance Magic moves to transform into different creatures. Shantae learns new dances as the game progresses, and there is even a cool rhythm-based mini-game in Scuttle Town where you can show off your dancing skill. The better she shakes it, the more Gems the crowd will toss at her.
In addition to her ponytail attack, Shantae can also unleash devastating special attacks by collecting and combining Fighting Gear items.
The gameplay mainly consists of side-scrolling action, but the freedom to choose where you want to go gives it a non-linear feel. For example, you might have to explore around for a while before completing a specific task which gives you the ability to access new levels.
Challenging overworlds must be explored before you can even think about gaining entrance to tricky and puzzle-filled dungeons. In all, there are 50 different locations to discover.
Shantae visits a variety of towns during her quest, each with something different to offer. She can relax in a bathhouse in Scuttle Town, or visit the mysterious Firefly Shrine in Water Town. There are many adventure gameplay elements which come into play as Shantae struggles to track down Risky Boots.
The sun even rises and sets as you travel through the game, which adds great variety to the environmental graphics. An enemy which is easily defeated in the day will become much stronger once the sun has set.
Don't let the genie theme scare you away -- Shantae is a serious game with enough depth and challenge to satisfy even the most hardcore gamers. Be sure to click on the Video/Audio link above to see Shantae in action.
This game is scheduled to be released in March 2002.
