Description

Fighter Within is a 3D one-on-one fighting game where the fighters are controlled through the player's movement captured through the Kinect peripheral. The basic concept is similar to the Kinect launch title Fighters Uncaged developed largely by the same team. In the story mode the player controls the young man Matt Gilford who had a hard time growing up and learned to fight on the streets. During one of his criminal endeavours he ends up in a dojo where one of the instructors takes pity on him and offers to train him. The plot then expands into a conspiracy surrounding a book of fighting techniques written by an old master through 21 fights with a tutorial.

The fighters can throw different types of punches and kicks mimicked through the player's movement. The game for instance registers the difference in height and whether it is a straight punch or a hook. When a certain amount of hits lands, is blocked or dodged, a powerful combo or counter attack is triggered, with a cinematic effect but without direct input by the player for that move. There are different stances. When in open guard, the fighter is vulnerable for incoming attacks, but cannot be thrown. When in guard, it is possible to switch between high and low to block incoming attacks (high punches, and low punches and round kicks respectively), but this leaves the opponent an opportunity to perform a throw. It is also possible to duck, but then a round kick will stun the character. When on the offensive there are straight punches and hooks, both high and low. High ones push the opponent and low ones rotate the character. By leaning backwards or forwards the distance between the character and the opponent can be altered.

While fighting a ki meter in the bottom part of the screen can be charged for up to three cells to launch ki strikes. These cannot be blocked by an opponent. They are charged by raising both hands at the same time. Ki strikes include a push kick, a back move, a high round kick, and a swap to switch positions. When three cells are charged a slam can be activated. It is a powerful attack followed by a short quick-time event (called a summoning challenge) where certain moves need to be mimicked to follow it up with an additional combo. Certain ki strikes can only be used at specific ranges. Additional gameplay elements include poles that be incorporated in the attacks, sticks and a powerful finishing move to end a fight.

The game contains twelve characters (Chayan, DJ Joao, Faergas, J-Gun, Loa, Matt, Maze, Mia, Sabina, Van, Vince, and Yubei) all with two unique moves for each one. The game can be played in the single-player story mode, in a training session or against another human player in the local multiplayer option. An optional ghost image can be enabled to help time the counters.
