Rabbit Hole 3D
Description
Rabbit Hole 3D is a fast-paced action game with a minimalist, procedurally generated retro look and chiptune music. The player steers a red block through a 3D environment as in a racing game with the goal to survive as long as possible while avoiding obstacles. The background consists of a large heap of grey letters. The player races through a tunnel with grey arches. Each arch holds a word made up out of large pixels. Words need to be passed by moving through an opening formed by the letter. For instance, you can pass through the bottom opening on the letter A. There is no spacing between the entire letters.
Acceleration is not influenced by the player and is done automatically. Movement left and right is based on lanes, moving one lane left or right with each press. It is also possible to jump up (swiping on iOS), but there are no gradations in vertical movement; it's either completely up or down. For letters that do not have openings at the bottom or the top, it is not possible to pass through the room in the middle vertically. Instead, letters have been altered to always leave at least one possibility, for instance the top left pixel of the letter E is removed.
The words are taken from the first chapter of the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Each line is read by a female voice and then the player races through the words where the cycle is repeated for the next line. After a certain number of words a new level is reached. The game does not stop, but introduces some changes that influence speed, add curves in the level path and change the colour of the environment.
Letters are either blue or red. Red letters are those that belong to the word 'rabbit hole' shown at the bottom of the screen. If the player passes one of the red letters, it is coloured in the words at the bottom. When the word is completed, an extra life is provided. There is no way to continue the game otherwise. If no extra life is earned, the game needs to be started over entirely. The game does not change the red and blue letters based on what is left to be completed; the player has to keep track of this himself. Optionally there is a practice mode with unlimited lives. The later released Steam edition does not offer major changes, except for a few control tweaks.
