Pickle Wars
Description
Aliens that look like giant dill pickles are about to conquer the human colony of Arcadia. Five hundred years of continuous peace led to complete disarmament, and humans find themselves unprepared for war. Only a brave lad named Dave, armed with a Salad Shooter, can face the murderous pickles. His task is to find ancient weapons and put an end to the war.
Pickle Wars is a platform game using dual parallax scrolling. Dave jumps, shoots, and climbs his way through the large levels, locating weapons and unlocking areas. The game came in a trilogy of three episodes:
- Invasion of the Pickle People (shareware)
- Escape from the Pickle Planet
- The Search for the Doomsday Machine

The Good
I liked the whole premise, about pickles from outer space invading your planet, and you fighting them with funny weapons. Seriously, some of this stuff reminds me of something from a Flaming Lips album!
A standard early 90's platformer which feels good to play, the controls are just right, the sprites the right size, the movement feels good, etc. The whole thing has the feel of an enjoyable B-grade flick.
The Bad
The production is a bit budget, even for an old game. The graphics could be a little sharper, the animations a little more complex, etc. You know what though? The amateurish feel actually makes the game better for me -- it complements the whole B-grade movie feel.
The worst thing is the gameplay window -- sideways is fine but you can't see as much vertically. There is a look up and down key though, and you get used to it.
The Bottom Line
Standard early 90's platformer with a wacky premise. Unique and fun.
