Description

After Dark Games is a spin-off from the successful After Dark screensaver collections. It features the following eleven original games:

  • Hula Girl: A "timed" game of sorts (the screen moves upward and you can't leave the visible area), Hula Girl features none other than a girl with a hula hoop. Grab the cola, cupcakes, ice cream, and hula-hoops while avoiding spiders, broccoli, frogs, and mean sisters. Each platform you land on grabs you one point, but watch your yukk-o-meter!

  • Fish Shtick: Unscramble the letters before the clock reaches 0! Collect as many points as you can and get a high score! One point for four-letter words, two for 5-letter words, three for 6-letter words, etc.

  • Roof Rats: Get everyone off the roof and leave yourself with as few rooms remaining as possible. Eliminate rooms by putting two-or-more of the same colour together and double-clicking. Each person has their own number of floors that they can jump off of. The grannie has to be on ground level, the rat can jump off of 1 floor, the dog - 2 floors, the pogo-boy - 3 floors, the boxing kangaroo - 4 floors, the buff man - 5 floors.

  • Solitaire: No twists here, just a simple game of Klondike.

  • Roger Dodger: You control a glowing orb that needs to collect power-ups (green) and then make its way to the pulsing green gateway. Avoid red things; they'll kill you!

  • Zapper: Standard trivia; yes-or-no questions. Every time you get three-in-a-row correct and your time will increase, as well as the jackpot (third) point level.

  • Mowin' Maniac: Can you say Pac-Man? That's all this game is: a variant with a lawnmower theme.

  • Bad Dog 911: Using six letters, create as many words as you can before time runs out! Every "real" word will move the scaffolding closer to you, but the clock is ticking! When it's half-past and you haven't gotten the scaffolding yet, you die!

  • Toaster Run: Ah, the little toaster that was the first in a series of infamous screen savers. Now the little toaster is on a mission to gather all the toys and put the child in bed. Hitting an object causes the toaster to lose power; bread increases it. Watch out for the TV! The static really hurts!

  • Foggy Boxes: Dots in disguise. Unfortunately, you can only play against the computer.

  • MooShu: The classic game of MahJongg, carried all the way from China! Select two tiles of matching design that are free on either the left or right and they disappear! Win by removing all the tiles.

Excellent collection of games based on the popular After Dark

The Good
Prior to Windows 95, Microsoft’s operating system lacked a screensaver, a program that will display an animation or a series of images if the display was left idle for a certain period of time. And so, it was up to third parties such as Berkeley Systems to fill the void, and one such product was Berkeley’s After Dark, a series of screensaver packages that were released for the Macintosh and PC. When Sierra acquired the company in the late Nineties, the company decided not to continue with the screensavers. Instead, they made a games package based on Berkeley’s work.

This package is comprised of eleven games, with each game being accessed within the Start menu. When you start one of them for the first time, you are asked to enter your name so that you create your own session. You can add another player, and that session is restricted to them. From anywhere within the game, you can set options for the game, view the instructions, or display the high scores.

Some of the games are influenced by popular culture, but the developers were careful to use original sprites. “Mowin’ Maniac”, for instance, is a Pac-Man clone featuring gardeners, dogs, and zombies. “Toaster Run” is a game reminiscent of Head Over Heels, but contains different objectives. All the games are good, but I really enjoy “Fish Schticks” and “Bad Dog 911”, where you have to enter as many words as you can without running out of time. They are ideal for improving your skills at Scrabble.

Each game has two or three pages of instructions, and they are worth reading if you are new to the game. The layouts of these instructions is excellent, with text often being restricted to one side, and graphics on the other. The options screen lets you change between three types of difficult and change audio settings. There are other options unique to a specific game. “MooShu Tiles”, the Mahjongg game, lets you choose the appearance of the tiles as well as their layout. There are eleven icons below the main game screen, and these allow you to jump to a game without going to the desktop first.

Sound-wise, I love the background music in “Fish Schticks”; it has a calming feel to it. The sound effects in “Mowin’ Maniac” are great. As for the graphics, all of the games boast great animations and sprite detail.

The Bad
The standard Windows mouse cursor is intrusive. Moving it around so that it does not get in the way is tedious, and I tend to forget to do so after I choose another game to play. Sierra could have allowed the player to hide the cursor so that this habit won’t get repeated.

The Bottom Line
After Dark Games is a collection of eleven entertaining games with great sound and graphics. A few of the games are clones of popular games, but most of them are original. Each game includes instructions that are clear and easy to read. If you enjoy the screensavers from Berkley from the past, then you will love this.

the enslaving After Dark Games keep you up till the morning light

The Good
I liked (and still like) especially the fluid, neatly rounded, motion of the pictures, and the selection of games.
Each of the played tunes is happy and uplifting. It is a unique set of games, and there are eleven of them, which means that you cannot easily tire of them.

The Bad
That it is not possible to recall a certain game of solitaire once you have finished playing. But perhaps this is asking too much, considering the size of the game.

I can find no further flaws.

But, there is a question bothering me: HOW SOON CAN WE EXPECT A LARGER PACKAGE, WITH MORE HANDPICKED AND SUPERB LITTLE GAMES?

The Bottom Line
A small wonder-package, which contains all those games which quickly de-stress a wound up person. Some are classics in their own right: Solitaire, Roofrats, Mowing maniac and Mooshu, though known under other names elsewhere. Other games, such as Hula girl and Bad dog 911, are quite original as far as I know. But make no mistake: all eleven games are equally enslaving!

My favourite is 'roofrats' . When you play this game all figures that you rescue by collapsing the buildings have their own sound. The dogs bark, the mice peep and the little ''woow' s and shy 'thank you"'s of the grannies always make me laugh.

The After Dark Games come with very nice graphics, sound and music. A must for everyone who sets out for that proverbial uninhibited island.

These games are fun! Nice for kids and adults alike!

The Good
There is a mixture of arcade and word game fun in this after dark collection. The music and sound effects are great! Easy to understand instructions! Colorful and crazy!

The Bad
Nothing

The Bottom Line
I would say..."I know a great game package you can get for your kids...but you should not tell them that you have it for a couple of months while you play all the games!!!"...LOL
