Global Defence Force

aka: The Chikyū Bōeigun 2
Moby ID: 40208

PlayStation 2 version

An unknown gem.

The Good
Global Defense Force is very unique, and has its own style. It is a third person shooter, with an arcade feel. I spent many hours playing this one, because when you start playing, you can't stop. It is a long game, after playing 10 missions, I haven't completed even 5% of the game. The controls are incredibly great and smooth, even with the huge frame rate drops. The graphics aren't that great: it doesn't have shadows; the characters doesn't fade when killed, they simply go out the screen without any effect. But those things aren't bad, they are the charm of Global Defense Force. You can choose between 2 characters: the infantry one, which you can choose assault rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers, rocket launchers and guided missiles; and the PaleWing one, which features a futuristic clothing, a jetpack attached at your back and you can choose between futuristic weapons, like a plasma launchers and shockwave guns.

The Bad
The frame rate drops frequently to 10/5 frames per second. It doesn't break the action, but looks and feel very awkward. The game looks like the Ps2 can't handle it.

The Bottom Line
It is an awesome game, with a great concept and extremely huge replay value. I highly recommend if you like arcade-style games or shooters. Global Defense Force was released on Europe and on Japan, with the Simple 2000 covermount. It is very rare, but if you own a modchipped console you can find it easily for download.I suggest getting Earth Defense Force 2017, for the Xbox 360, which is a better version of GDF,with more sophisticated graphics and no frame rate drops.
