Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2

aka: Dragon Ball Z: Bukū Ressen

Description

Supersonic Warriors 2 is the DS sequel to the GBA fighting game Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors, based on Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series.

The game features one-on-one battles between over 30 characters with their own movement and combos. There is a main path in the story mode that coincides with Toriyama's story for every character and some other paths played out as "what if?" scenarios, adding replayability to the game. Next to the story mode, there is the Z battle, the VS battle, Maximum, Free battle and Practice mode. The game has three difficulty levels. In team battles the player can tap the touchscreen to select another fighter. Touch can also be used to perform a powerful combined attack when it is available.

The sequel moves away from the level system of the first game, where reaching a new character level led to upgraded statistics, or new sprites and attacks. This is replaced by individual characters that become available when a sufficient amount of Dragon Points is available.

DB fighting games comes to the DS

The Good
Dragon Ball has many fighting games since its success, and Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 is just another one.

This game has many good things, but nothing more. One of the best things is the fact that there are many levels to play, and a main story for every character (and there are many characters too). Every character has different paths during the story, one of the paths is the story as we know, and the other ones are "what if" paths. To unlock those levels you have to do specific things in specific battles, things like finishing the battle before you reach a determinate time or wining a battle with no damage on your side. You have a diagram with the paths of every character, so, you'll know in which fight you have to do those special things to access the special "what if levels".

Gameplay is good, you'll need a little time to know how to fight, but not much time. It's really much simple than the controls for Dragon ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi games. Apart from that, you have a training mode to learn the basics of the game, and you have a move list to know special powers of your character. Team skills are good and different from any other game of the series. With that, you can perform a special powerful move by touching the screen if you have the characters needed. You can unlock new moves too while you're finishing battles in the story mode.

You have many game modes. To finish the story with all the characters will take your time, but you have another modes like a versus mode or a maximum mode to make the game longer. Some hours of playing is needed to finish all the modes of the game.

There are many characters, and some of them are just there to help you. They can't fight, but they'll appear and perform a special move when you need it. Here you have minor characters like Satan or Dende, and everyone has a different power. Use them wisely and they'll be a good help.

The Bad
Some bad things on this game. To start with, battles are a little repetitive. You'll be trying to amount a lot of power to make special moves, but there's no real fight, just a little bit. There are so many magic attacks during a battle, and you can perform special moves again and again. When you do them some times you'll get bored because it's the same all the time. Every character has 4 special moves (it depends on where you are, but you don't have to do a special move like Street Fighter games or something, you have to press just two buttons and it'll work) beside the ultimate attack and the team attack.

Sometimes, you know that you can unlock a new level because you've seen it in the diagram, but you don't know what you have to do, so, you'll repeat a thousand times the same battle trying to discover what to do to unlock it. Many times it's just a time problem, you have to finish them quick and nothing more, but other times what you have to do is to eliminate your foe with a determined character of your team, so, there are many combinations and you have to try all of them before you find it.

Game is not hard, maybe you'll have some problems in the final battles of the maximum mode, but the game is easy. Controls are easier than the controls for the Budokai Tenkaichi series, but battles aren't as spectacular as they are in the other game. Well, it's not correct to compare a game for the DS with another one for the PS2, in which battles are really spectacular with special moves, fast combinations and many other things, but this game for the DS could be much more spectacular.

The Bottom Line
Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 is a good fighting game, one of the best for a portable system like the DS. It has many characters, many game mods and many hours of fighting until you finish all the things of the game (which is something really important if you're planning to buy this game), but it needs something more to become a perfect game. Gameplay is a little repetitive, but you can do some epic battles with this game. The team battle system suits with the game perfectly and makes it a little more different. Good, but not essential!
