Description official description

LittleBigPlanet is a puzzle platformer where the player controls sackboys. It takes the characters on an adventure through levels with different themes and settings, trying to reach the end of each level alive. The platforming is based entirely on physics where the sackboys can push or pull items, or generally manipulate them with their movement or weight. In addition to running, jumping, pushing and pulling, it is also necessary to master grabbing dangling objects and swinging from them to get over some obstacles and traps.

The game can be played by up to four players simultaneously with some puzzles requiring more than one player to be solved. Levels consists of three planes: foreground, middle, and background, which can be traversed.

Next to the main game with about 50 levels, a large portion is devoted to creating user generated content. Players can design their own levels and devise custom rules. The objects used to build up the levels are largely based on the characteristics of real world materials emulated by the physics engine.

During the course of a level, stickers can be picked up for (mostly) decorative purposes or new items used to dress up the sackboys or for inclusion in the player's own levels. User created content can be shared via the PlayStation Network.

The Good
Those are three words to describe such an amazing game as LittleBigPlanet. You get to create your sack person, let them take journeys on pre-made levels (from the community or Media Molecule), and even create your own levels. Although it can easily be categorized into a 3D side scroller when you start playing, after your full experience with the game (collecting the trophies, buying things for it like costumes, levels, and creator packs on Playstation Store, completing the Media Molecule story, creating a level, etc) there is one word to describe this game: amazing. It's not only for kids, but for teens and adults alike.

The Bad
I couldn't really say I had much against the game after I finished the main story, but the trouble came when I created a few levels. I decided to get a storage area for all of the objects I had from my journeys in community levels, when a little box popped up that told me I my profile was too large. So I tried removing some things to make more room, but the box kept coming up. I had to press "ok" a billion times. However, Media Molecule released an update for the game available for download. I downloaded it, and though I haven't played the game in a while, I think it fixed the problem, since Media Molecule addressed that complaint fully.

The Bottom Line
A different experience compared to the mostly fast-paced games you would originally find on a PS3. It's an overall fun game that's recommended for PS3 owners.

LittleBigPlanet appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.

Postponed release

The release of the game was postponed for a week because of some offensive content. A few days prior to the official release, a post on the PlayStation forums claimed that a song played on the first level of the third world (Swinging Safari by Malian musician Toumani Diabaté) contained a lyric taken from the Quran. Sony immediately recalled all copies of the game and replaced the offending track with an instrumental version, however, there are reports of some copies having been sold before the official release date. For the EU version, these copies can be identified by the Sony product code on the disc. In the modified release of the game the code ends on "#2", whereas the code on original, unmodified discs does not.
