ACTIVISION RELEASES TENCHU 2: BIRTH OF THE STEALTH ASSASSINS, THE GROUND BREAKING PREQUEL TO THE WORLDWIDE HIT, TENCHU
Santa Monica, CA – August 15, 2000 – Witness the dawn of the stealth assassins. Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) continues to propel the stealth-action genre forward with the release of Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins for the PlayStation game console. The game is currently available at retail channels across North America and carries a suggested retail price of $39.95.
Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins, the prequel to the million-selling worldwide hit Tenchu, is set in Japan’s period of Warring States and gives players control of three young ninja warriors – Rikimaru, Ayame and Tatsumaru - as they begin a journey that will take them across the kingdom of Lord Gohda, test their skills in stealth, strategy and fighting and ultimately define their future.
“Activision has made a name for itself by introducing new franchises to the market and following those efforts up with extensive sequels,” said Michael Pole, executive vice president, Activision Worldwide Studios. “Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins is a perfect example of this and the prequel will establish itself as the benchmark for the stealth-action genre with its innovative authentic ninja gameplay, superior graphics and state-of-the-art mission editor.”
Produced by Sony Music Entertainment and developed by Acquire, Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins draws players into the secret world of the ninja where they must move unseen and unheard as they attempt to avenge the betrayal of their lord. As they begin the game, players can choose to play as either Rikimaru or Ayame, each with his or her own unique strengths and weaknesses. Depending on which ninja is chosen, players will uncover a unique storyline that changes based on the character played. Once players have completed the game as Rikimaru and Ayame they can unlock an additional seven levels as the powerful Tatsumaru.
For the first time, stealth-action gamers will be able to create their own missions with Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins’ mission editor mode. Providing infinite replayability, the mission editor mode allows players to choose from 12 different environments in which they can place objects and enemies and determine AI behavior before saving their creations to a memory card. The mission editor mode also allows players to play and modify 15 pre-built missions.
With 29 story-based missions that take place during night, dusk and day, the game not only expands on the groundbreaking features of the original by adding new ninja tools and weapons – from blow guns and blinding dust to exploding arrows and smoke bombs - but adds additional depth by introducing new mission objectives and character abilities – including the ability to swim, search and hide bodies - that will push players to master new skills and increase their ingenuity.
The game has been rated “M” (Animated Violence, Animated Blood and Gore – “Mature” – content suitable for person ages 17 and older) by the ESRB.
