Star Wars®: Episode I: Racer’ Brings Movie Action To Your Living Room

LOS ANGELES, May 12, 1999 - Strap yourself in to experience the galaxy's most anticipated and only game racing challenge… Star Wars: Episode I: Racer. Nintendo 64 puts gamers in the role of Anakin Skywalker and more than 20 other Star Wars characters in the heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping Podracing sequence from the film Star Wars® Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Developed with the power of N64 in mind and published by LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC, Star Wars: Episode I: Racer for the N64 will be exclusively sold by Nintendo. The game will be available the week of May 17 for a suggested retail price of $69.95. In conjunction with the game's launch, Nintendo will offer a Limited Edition Nintendo 64 Star Wars: Episode I: Racer hardware Bundle, which includes a system, game and one controller, for a suggested retail price of $149.95.

In the outlaw sport of Podracing, players compete for the Galactic Championship by skimming across massive Star Wars landscapes at breakneck speeds of up to 600 miles per hour. Podracers are custom-designed vehicles tethered to dual jet engines. Players must use their racing skills and quick reflexes to "rein" in the Podracer's powerful engines and beat their opponents to the finish line.

"Star Wars: Episode I: Racer not only captures all of the speed and excitement from the breath-taking Podracing sequence in the landmark film, it goes much further," says Peter Main, Nintendo's executive vice president, sales and marketing. "N64 owners will also find new locations and characters that are not in the film. If you want a heart-pounding Episode I experience, your N64 has it."

Choose to play as 23 different characters including Anakin Skywalker, the only human capable of competing in the dangerous Podrace, and a host of alien creatures hailing from the Star Wars universe. Each character operates its own personalized Podracer with variable acceleration, technique and top speed attributes. Execute a daring jump over giant gaps in the skyway on the planet of Ord Ibanna, or rotate the Podracer on its side to negotiate a tight squeeze through Beggar's Canyon on Anakin's home world of Tatooine. There are a total of 25 courses on seven different Star Wars worlds.

With each race qualification, players earn funds to repair and upgrade their Podracer. They can use new parts from Watto's Shop or scavenge the junkyard for used or damaged items. Prior to each race, inspect your Podracer's performance status in the racing bay. During the race you can repair engine damage with the touch of a button, but prepare to sacrifice your current position.

A number of game play modes in Star Wars: Episode I: Racer keep the racing action fast and furious. One-player "Free Play" allows pilots to race on any available track. "Tournament Mode" features three difficulty levels and the chance to be crowned Galactic Champion. The game's two-player mode allows users to go head-to-head with a horizontal split screen. Star Wars: Episode I: Racer supports the N64 Expansion Pak’ for stunning, high-resolution graphics. Rumble Pak compatibility lets gamers "feel" the power of the Podracer engines.

Nintendo Power Magazine will release an official Star Wars: Episode I: Racer Player's Guide to coincide with the launch of the game on May 17.

You can can upgrade your Podracer by doing well in the game's deep Tournament Mode. The irascible Watto drives a hard bargain at his shop and junkyard, but you'll have to deal with him if you want to build the ultimate Podracer. Two friends can race head-to-head.

Star Wars: Episode I: Racer has earned an "E" (everyone) rating by the independent Entertainment Software Rating Board. Games rated "E" are suitable for persons age six or older.
