Description

Galcon is an action-based strategy game, reminiscent of the classic board game Risk, and inspired by Galactic Conquest (1987) and Stellar Invasion (presumably 1986). The DOS Galcon game was first conceived in 1995 by Phil Hassey and in the years leading up to 2000 re-made various times with different browsers versions. This version of the game is another remake by the same author first launched for Windows in 2006 and it is entirely different from his original 1995 version.

Starting with an amount of units on a single planet, the player conquers planets which in turn have a production value to produce spaceships which are then used to attack unoccupied planets, enemy planets or defend against enemy attacks. Typically each player starts in a randomly generated galaxy with a single planet under their control. The only controls at the player's disposal is to move spaceships between planets, fortifying areas under attack and attacking planets that are defenceless.

In the basic game the player is presented different kinds of challenges with varying amount of opponents. There are fifteen different missions with variations on the basic gameplay. There is also a tutorial, a map editor and online multiplayer for up to twelve players.

Trivia

Inspiration

Although Galactic Conquest and Stellar Invasion are cited for inspiration, the history of the basic game dates back much further, starting with WAR for the CDC-6600/6400 (mid '70s), DECWAR (1982) and Stan Bartsch' D.I.S.K. for the PDP-11 system in the early 1980's. That version was also ported to UNIX around 1985. It was eventually renamed Galactic Conquest in 1985 and served as the basic prototype for the 1987 version of Galactic Conquest.
