Description official descriptions

The third title in the The Settlers series starts with gods of different nations idle and decadent. Their authority known only as "He" challenges Jupiter, Horus and Ch'ih-yu to choose a leader of their respective nation and lead him to world conquest.

There are three nations: Romans, Egyptians and Japanese. Each nation has its own styled buildings, industry focus, spells for priests and special resource required to appease their leading diety. The main gameplay is most similar to its predecessor, but with a more elaborate economy. However, manual road construction is no longer necessary, as routes frequently taken by workers are automatically converted to roads.

A new feature is the inclusion of mobile artillery as an advanced late-game military unit. Ships can be constructed to transport units and cargo across water. With post-release patches, the Thief unit was introduced to steal resources from enemies while disguised as one of their own from afar.

The game also supports multiplayer via Internet and LAN.

Tedious, boring and slow.

The Good
Much like its predecessor, Settlers 3 has a fascinating resources management system. You'll have to find your way through dozens of different buildings which can only be built under specific conditions.

The Bad
Unlike the intuitive and straight-forward way used in Settlers 2, this game is annoying. All of the buildings look the same, and you never know whether a building is well supplied or not. Additionally, you need special structures to get more workers, which adds to the general chaos, and there are no roads to ease management.

The Bottom Line
The new graphics are great, but losing some of the original's mechanics was a mistake.

Trivia

Awards

In the German gaming magazine PC Player (issue 01/2000) The Settlers III received a special award as "Best German Game in 1999".

Copy protection

The Settlers III was one of the pioneers of copy protection in gaming. When the copy protection detects a pirated release, the forester's trees do not grow, and the iron smelter produces pigs. This renders soldier production impossible.
