Description

Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2006: Trophy Season is a hunting game and the ninth sequel to the original Cabela's Big Game Hunter, in conjunction with hunting supply company Cabela's.

It is a linear, story-driven game set in different locations in North America. The player is the grandson of a legendary hunter known as Pete. Pete took along his grandson and had the goal of bagging all 65 species until he had an accident. Now his grandson wants to reach this goal for him. The overall is to claim every trophy in the region by competing in hunting tournaments, but there are also random events and side quests through primary and secondary objectives. The latter are not required to complete locations. The story does not have an important role in the game, but sometimes there are NPCs who will recognize the protagonist as Pete's grandson.

Various equipment needs to be bought including weapons and clothing. A warden in a lodge in each region needs to be visited to obtain tags. Similar to Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2005 Adventures colored markers are used for mammals: red (live), purple (wounded or special) and blue (dead). Mammals that are not game such as foxes and rabbits or females of some species such as deer, elk and moose are unmarked and they cannot be hunted. Sometimes there are specific requirements in tournaments such as certain animals within a certain distance or by best score. This can be tracked by zooming in with a scope, as helpful text will appear showing the species, scoring, sex and immediate distance.

There are also restrictions that result in warnings when violated such as hunting animals without tags, driving into NPCs or hunting with a vehicle, firing a weapon between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m or within 50 yards of an inhabited building. After three violations the region needs to be left and is restarted. There are 36 big game mammals in the game, as well as 80 new inter-connected maps including six regions, 63 hunting maps and seventeen lodge maps. There are three difficulty levels. The game can be played in a Quick Hunt or a Career Hunt mode.
