Champion

Champion is a 1-player arcade and strategy game for the TRS-80 CoCo.

You are a crusader for the side of all that is right and good, or more appropriately, a Champion. Blessed with super powers, you have decided to use these abilities to fight crime. Unfortunately, the criminal mastermind Mr. Bigg has decided to use his superpowers to rule mankind instead of help. Mr. Bigg has plotted to take over the fair city of Oakdale, and you are determined to stop him at all costs. Mr. Bigg has hired a small army of villains, and will use them to stop you.

You must search the city of Oakdale and gather the 3 components necessary to tune into the aural frequencies of Mr. Bigg, and track down the chief villain. You also must find the Power Drain, the only device which will allow you to defeat Mr. Bigg in combat.

There are 3 levels of difficulty. The game screen is divided into messages, commands, and a small map of the surrounding area. The player has the option to fly or walk. In fly mode, the game moves in real time, and the player can not interact with the villains. During this mode, the enemies move on their own. When the player lands, they enter walk mode, where gameplay is turn-based, and the player can search, take items, view their map, or fight with the various villains. The player can not search an area or get an item until all villains in that area have been defeated.

In combat, the player can punch, kick, dodge, blast, retreat, target specific areas, or use the power drain if in possession. Enemies are shown on the screen, and their attacks are animated. The player has limited strength, which is permanently lost with each hit. Endurance is drained by using actions, but is replenished during flight.

Victory is achieved by defeating Mr. Bigg. Defeat occurs when the villains take over the city, or all health is lost.
