Benefactor

Amiga Specs

Description

As Ben E. Factor himself, you must travel through the six moons of Minniat, on which the peaceful and good-natured people of Lullyat have been kidnapped. These Merry Men each have their own potential skill once rescued, so releasing them in the right order is often essential for completing a level. Some Merry Men have grey suits - this marks them out as joyless and awkward characters which must be guided through a coloring machine.

The Miniation people have loaded the 60 levels with various nasties, ranging from slugs (slow, but must be jumped), Rock Men (those with sharp backs are more dangerous, but both are quite nippy), spiked teeth emerging from manholes, and so on. A large map is provided, and at any point you can pause the game and scroll around the map, which makes the forward planning easier.

A very solid platformer for the AMIGA

The Good
I remember playing Benefactor a lot, when i got tired playing Pang with my friend. He usually went to sleep after the long playing sessions, but i stayed awake and fired up Benefactor.

It's pure fun, people tend to call it a Lemmings clone game, though it's much closer to Pushover and any sidescroller platform game, with the brain training elements included.

It has zounds of levels you can fight through, it has adorable settings and very frustrating gameplay elements, that keeps you coming back for more every time, even after years.

I still haven't finished the game, though I have been playing it for 10 years now :D

The Bad
It can get extremely hard at times, as the player progresses through the settings and levels.

There isn't much there not to like, it's a hardcore, well built platform game.

The Bottom Line
You control a tiny animated hero, who can roll, jump, hang and that's pretty much about it you can do with him. He needs to release some form of hairy-furry creatures, who start to go to the exit every time you release them from their jail. The grey creatures are needed to be coloured, so they become smart and don't fall off high platforms, and so on. There are lots of machinery and hazardous environment obstacles around the maps, but that's the fun part, realizing how to progress through a level and how to release all the creatures, without dying once.

Once you reach a new "era", the music and the enemies become different, which is a standard in these types of games, and you enter into a completeyi different mood, though the point of the game never changes.

I would not recommend to play it for more than 10-15 maps, it can be very frustrating, however this is what makes you come back for more, the feeling that you KNOW how to finish a level, you just can't do it, because every time there would be something that you do exactly right, so you die...
