More After Dark: Volume 1
Description
Officially an add-on for the famous screen saver collection, After Dark (v2.0), More After Dark: Volume 1 was Berkeley Systems' first foray into games with its inclusion of the module Lunatic Fringe, "the exciting new space game from the creator of Solarian II." Although there was never any "Volume 2" of More After Dark, with the release of later editions of After Dark, more games would be included as screen saver modules. While After Dark was already a popular screensaver (arguably responsible for the screensaver craze of the 1990s), the games themselves proved popular enough to warrant a release of their own, known as After Dark Games, with games based on some of the other popular screensaver modules.
The actual game that was included, called Lunatic Fringe, is a simple top-down space shooter. Once the screensaver module has been activated, the keyboard is used to control the your ship, which can be flown in 360Β° space. As you explore, you encounter planets, asteroids, and enemy ships. From the mini-map you can observe when objects are approaching.
You begin the game at your home base. You must return there from time to time in order to refuel and/or repair your ship. One of the more novel elements of the game is that different parts of your ship can be damaged to varying degrees and, when damaged past a certain threshold, each element will begin to misbehave in a unique way, such as a disabled blaster or misbehaving thrusters.
