Frontier's "Dog's Life" goes 'walkies'

CAMBRIDGE, UK - October 29th, 2003 - "Dog's Life", Frontier Developments' game published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe on PlayStation2 is now available across Europe.

The game is Frontier's original IP and the intent was to make a game which delivers entertainment for an audience that includes more families and females than is usual for most games. The game features large free-roaming environments and truly novel experiences such as "Smell-o-Vision" mode and introduces the player character of Jake the dog, a lovable rascal who sets out to rescue his girlfriend Daisy from the clutches of a mysterious band of dog-nappers. Dogs' Life has received widespread recognition for its fresh approach, has already won the 'Most Innovative Game' award at the 2003 Leipzig Game Convention, and is audio-localised for 11 European langauges on one disc.

Playing as the nimble-pawed protagonist Jake, a plucky pup with a nose for adventure, you'll sniff out a sinister dog-napping plot involving the canine-hating Miss Peaches and Jake's pedigree chum, Daisy. This is the world's first game where you can truly be a dog -- Dog's Life allows you to take on the role of a lifelike hound, rather than prancing round as a bipedal canine caricature. Set in the rural midwest US countryside, Dog's Life sees its hero embark on an epic journey that spans the US, taking in everything from ski resorts to vibrant cities along the way. Playing as the nimble-pawed protagonist Jake, a plucky pup with a nose for adventure, you'll sniff out a sinister dog-napping plot involving the canine-hating Miss Peaches and Jake's pedigree chum, Daisy. Starting out on Jake's homely farm, you'll get a crash-course on how to perform doggy actions as you go walkies around the gloriously free-roaming environment, and learn a few new tricks too. Jake will quickly get his teeth into 'talking' to passing people, eating, and answering the call of nature by peeing and pooing everywhere, and doing pretty much anything you'd expect a mutt to do. You can choose to play Jake as a helpful, Lassie type of pup by assisting humans and carrying out tasks for treats, or go 'off the leash' and please yourself.

As well as being able to act just like a real dog, Jake also has the unique 'Smellovision' mode, which allows the perceptive pooch to 'see' smells on his travels, which are highlighted in different colours on the screen. Collect enough of these pungent pick-ups and you'll unlock sub-games that see you challenge neighbourhood pets to a variety of missions that'll determine your place in the town's barking order. Dog trials include rat-catching, sheep herding, racing and territory marking, and victories over competing canines ensures Jake's status remains higher than his rivals. This means that you can then order the mutts to carry out your dirty work, by fetching items, squeezing into crevices that Jake's too big to fit through, and generally utilising each hounds' unique doggy talents.

Set in a huge, vibrant world, with total freedom of action, Dog's Life is wonderfully charming slice of 3D adventure which introduces a totally unique feature to the proceedings.
