Description official description

Rock 'n Roll Racing is an arcade combat racing game. Combat plays a heavy role in the game, as each car has a frontal weapon, such as a laser or missile, and a drop weapon, such as spikes or mines. As you complete races, you get more money to upgrade your car. The soundtrack features famous rock tracks such as "Born to Be Wild, "Bad to the Bone," "The Peter Gunn Theme," "Highway Star" and "Paranoid."

The game is very similar to RPM Racing. The later released PC version is an official release, but based on the SNES version incorporating the ZSNES emulator and limited to three tracks.

Born To Be Wild

The Good
Rock n' Roll Racing is one of the most extensive racing titles on the SNES. There is a full story mode, several characters to choose from (with unique attributes), cars to unlock, an exhibition mode and 3 difficulty settings.

The best part of the game is the soundtrack. Since the name of the game is "Rock n' Roll" Racing, there are a few SNES cover versions of classic rock songs such as "Born To Be Wild" and "Paranoid". There is also an announcer in the game who calls the action for the ENTIRE race, an impressive feat for a system known for its minimal voice content.

The weapons serve as equalizers on the field and add that x factor needed to keep Rock n' Roll Racing from being a cut and dry racing game. All cars come equipped with a speed booster, a drop weapon such as landmines & oil slicks, and a firing weapon like lasers and missiles. This makes races highly tricking and makes you think of how to best use each of your weapons. All of your weapons can be upgraded with the cash you earn at each race (placing better gets you more money obviously), which encourages players to do better in races.

The tracks are pretty fun to race on as well. As you progress in the game the tracks get trickier by adding more slippery spots, tighter turns, more insane jumps, and more twists & turns.

The Bad
Time has not been kind to Rock n' Roll racer, and this is most obvious in the games content. Only 4 cars on the track at once and 3 of the drivers are always the same. While the soundtrack is quiet extensive for the SNES, 4 songs seems rather slim by today's standards.

Controls are a little awkward to handle. Due to Rock n' Roll Racing's isometric view (meaning the camera is at a fixed perspective other then behind the back) the controls may take some getting used to if you have never played before.

The Bottom Line
Despite its age, Rock n' Roll Racing is one of the most solid games on the SNES and can give modern racers a run for their money in terms of sheer replay value. Compared to other SNES racers Rock n' Roll Racing gives a lot more for your money and provides solid thrills. Perhaps the biggest problem with Rock n' Roll Racing was that a next gen sequel was never made (the Game Boy Advance edition was a more of a remake).
