Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish writer most famous for his adventure novels such as Treasure Island (1883). His psychological novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) gained such popularity that the names of its dual-personality protagonist came to signify a person with an evil "alter ego" in general.
