If you have the version from Al Lowe's website (the DOS version I assume), and you don't have a joystick, try 'X' or 'spacebar' which seems to work for me in DOSBox to skip calibration. The joystick calibration always shows at startup, but the game can be played with keyboard only. (I'm less successful with the mouse, I get a pointer, but the actions seem to require kbd input rather than mouse clicks)
