Yes. I've added this information to the original post.

I've been planning to buy this for quite a while (more precisely: since I played the demo a few weeks ago) but I couldn't afford it. I just played an hour or two and it is awesome. If the game stays this fun until the end I'll probably buy it someday. Even if I beat it while it's free.

I'm pretty sure the game will be free for life for anyone who installs it during this grace period. That's what I got from the news release, anyway.

You are right. This was confirmed in the Steam forums by Valve employees.

So I was right after all in the post above =)

Also, what I was after: compared to games that have "free weekends", this one looks permanent. It doesn't show "xx days/hours left" like those others. That means you only need to click the license to add the game to your library before the 24th and the game is yours forever (forever as in until Steam becomes self-aware and takes over the world). That also implies you don't even need to download the whole thing right now, just add it to your library.

Giving away the game for free, especially for Mac users now, is brilliant marketing. The "first hit is free" crack dealer analogy does it again. Try to get it out of your system after that.

And the second hit might just be around the corner too. You gotta love these guys.

Thanks for confirming! I usually don't partake in the "play X for free until Y" offers, and I almost missed the chance to add Portal to my permanent collection because of that.

I can't believe I have 5 Mobygamers on my Steam list and only ONE of them downloaded their free Portal copy. What the hell is wrong with you people? o_O

Also, I take it I'm missing a couple of you. Aren't you on the MG group? We need to get better at organizing ourselves if we are to take over the world, guys.

I got it a few days ago, after seeing this thread. I echo this sentiment: Portal is totally worth getting. Everyone should try it, especially now that it's free.

I got it when the Orange Box came out, like, a billion years ago. I guess that makes me a sucker.
