I'm anything but a die-hard FPS fan, but this game has a fantastic storyline. No wonder, check out in the credits who wrote it! Why is it so unknown?

The answer is simple: nobody plays a Tribes game for anything but multiplayer CTF 8)

But... I never play multiplayer... I found it only because I wanted to see everything Ken Levine has worked on. And this game has an awesome story.

They really picked the wrong franchise to feature a story-rich singleplayer mode. Pearls before swine! 8)

Pearls before swine! 8)

Absolutely :) But I'm glad that a single-player swine such as myself has discovered this pearl :)

Damn it, the story is good. It's a goddamn "Romeo and Juliet" in mechs!

With all this (justified) praise for the story, I just wanted to make sure, you don't forget the unique and remarkable gameplay! ;)

I found it very refreshing for a FPS especially the huge maps with the military approach. I don't know who far you are, but there are still some highlights (in the story as well as in the gameplay) ahead of you.

I'm in the past again, and it looks like everything was a huge misunderstanding... which of course makes the tragedy even more poignant. The story just keeps getting better, it's a lot like Romeo and Juliet in a Star Wars-like setting!

And yeah, the gameplay is cool, great variety, really fun to play!

Is the game worth 1€ btw? I never liked the original and I just find UT2004 to be a better bot-smashfest. But if the SP is any good I'd like to try it out since it's so cheap around here.

That's the kind of game I like: story by Ken Levine, looks extremely interesting, costs only 6 bucks and is altogether Oleg-approved - enough reasons for me to immediately order it (which I just did).

By the way, just had a look at your rap sheet, Oleg. You're not really playing the second Thief part before the first one? You know, it IS a continuous story...

Oh, really? You have to play the first Thief in order to understand the second? Since everyone say the second Thief is the best of the bunch, I figure I'll try this one...

Of course you can play the second one first, but I it does make a lot more sense after the first part. Heck, the first part's tutorial starts with Garrett as a boy, so much for chronology. And I actually think that "Thief Gold" is the best of the bunch, though I haven't played the third part yet (for reasons which escape me right now). Anyway, have fun!

Third part also connects very tightly with the others. Very recommended.

Definitely YES! The stories of "The Dark Project" and "The Metal Age" are very well connected. You will miss quite a lot if you play them in the reversed order. And from what I have deduced from your reviews, I am very confident that you will like the story. Righteous fury accompanied me through the last mission of Thief II!

This reminds me, I must add them to my "all times"

I was completely blown out by Tribes: Vengeance. And as I'm not into multiplayer that much. I was very reluctant at first. Great gameplay, great story. Great game.

Looks like BioShock made you go through the catalog of Irrational games. Good. Don't forget Swat 4, though. I know it's kinda completely not-your-cup-of-tea, but it is very breathtaking.

Bioshock and System Shock 2. While you were absent practicing Dorian and Lydian scales, tossing graphical objects around, eating salted tomatos, and doing other weird stuff, I played System Shock 2 and became a faithful follower of the Levine cult.

Why is SWAT 4 breathtaking?

What about Freedom Force?

Excellent idea, great game mechanics. No particular story, not very funny (means "occasionally funny").

[Q --start JazzOleg wrote--] Why is SWAT 4 breathtaking? [/Q --end JazzOleg wrote--]

Furious action sequences that last only a couple of nanoseconds, preceded by minutes of quality suspense. Reallife situations with reallife stories. (a man abusing his wife, robbery of the gas station)

Effortless context-menu control system and fantastic level design with a very realistic approach (no plants, sewers, casinos or penthouses, super-protected bank vaults) and strong attention to detail (think Bioshock, but... less glamorous, more life-like)

The game penalizes you for killing suspects. The most fantastic moment is when you discover an enemy and he's looking right at you, hesitating what to do, and you - shouting (with a specific key for "shouting") at him to surrender, ready to pull the trigger at any moment.

That was really intense and memorable. No other game (let alone squad based tactics) made me regret killing a suspect. A very genuine emotion.

System Shock IS a good game. But what can you do to play again 9 years later when your PC is under Windows XP and when System Shock 2 runs only with Winwows 95/98/2000. Electronic Arts Support only sighed and said there is nothing we can do. There must be a patch somewhere. Plizzzzze where??

what patch? for System shock? There is an easy way to get that to run:

I give you System Shock Portable -> http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,211.0.html

I played it through on Vista with that last year.

Did you ever play SWAT3? I think it's even more challenging and rewarding when it comes to perfect gameplay. At least I personally enjoyed it more online. Best COOP adrenaline rush I know.

Yes, I did. And I enjoyed it immensely too. But all the features I loved in SWAT3 made their way into SWAT4, so I'm not complaining. And SWAT4 has a better level design.

Of course, I can't comment on multiplayer, since I'm not that kind of guy. :-)

Maybe SWAT3 is better suited for it, I dunno. :-)

A-hah, gotcha! :D

Well, tons of my favourite features were dropped in SWAT4 so I don't know. I have to partially agree with the realistic level design and immersion in the singleplayer. But with the realistic levels comes the repetition problem, the enemies are always at the same spot and everytime you finish a level it's all the same.

In SWAT3 the AI and enemy placement is really unpredictable and gets your adrenaline pumped up in COOP really good.

It might partly be the fault of the demo. I know nothing else about this game than having played the demo, and the way it was presented I was positively sure that it was a multiplayer-only game. Perhaps also because some of its predecessors focused on multiplayer?
