I'm looking for a way to determine - out of curiousity - the exact number of colours used in an image. It's all pixel art, from old or oldschool games, so the number won't be very high. I'm just curious. I don't need palettes, I don't need "average colours" or proportion of red, blue etc., I just want the exact number. Is it 26? 32? 41? I'd just like to know.
There is a code for that, but I don't even know what to do with the code! Where would I need to insert it to make it count the number of colours in a given file?
There is an online tool for that (and online tools are preferred for their simplicity if really, all that's driving me to check it is annoying curiousity), but it's only for JPG images. My screenshots are in PNG format and obviously I can't JPG-ise them because it would distort them and change the number of colours.

Thanks. I'll check it out. I have IrfanView, but mostly use it for taking screenshots from non-DOS games, my primary program when I'm trying to draw something is Paint XP for Windows 7 (I really don't know how to use new Paint...). Recently I even did a piece of fanart for "Foxtail" - a daytime version of a scenery from chapter 3 - using only Paint XP for Windows 7...

Probably too heavyweight of a solution if IrfanView is already available, but for what it's worth: GIMP also supports this out of the box. Go to "Color > Info > Colorcube Analysis".
