Both in search and the credits wizard, developer names that are entered without diacretics are not found. This is especially worrisome for the credits section where inexperienced contributors will make lots of new developers where that is not needed. We used to have a mapping system for diacretics on the old site (e.g. é > e). Could that be implemented again?

Yes, as it makes adding credits far more time consuming (or leads to far more duplicates, as you say).

Just checking if there's been any progress with this. I'm adding a game where a lot of the names would have accents and I'm not getting any matches for them on the Disambiguation step. eg. Roman Mudry won't give me a result for Roman Múdry.

Edit: Though results aren't consistent. Some names without accents will result in the correct match even if the main name has an accent and there aren't any AKAs on file.

110% needed.

I'm bumping this thread to see if there's been any progress on this. When entering credits, some names with accents still aren't showing up in the results on step 3, though the name did show up in the search results. To second Sciere's question, is there some reason why the old system can't be implemented?

The old system can't be used because search works very differently on the new site, but indeed this is needed. We're doing work on search now, and I think I can solve this cleanly, so I will try to get a fix for this in Soon™.

Thanks for the response. However it seems like something was changed with the last update with regards to the credits matching part of step 3 and the results are quite inaccurate at times. Some examples from a recent submission:

  • Nana Fujita automatically being matched with Nanako Fujita.
  • Jim Huntley to Jim Hughson.
  • Scott Easley to Scott Everts.
  • Laird Malamed to Laird Macintosh, etc.

In some of these cases, it would also automatically add the other name in parentheses. So, eg. Nana Fujita (as Nanako Fujita). When I created a new entry and tried to match by the ID number, it would still display as 'Nana Fujita (as Nana Fujita)'. To get around this, I had to edit the name (by changing it to 1Nana Fujita) so that it would direct to the right entry without adding the extra name in parentheses.

Yes, there was a change that resulted in a bug. Sorry about that! I've repaired that bug, so you should not see this mis-matching any more (and the exact matches should once again show up at the top of the list).
