If anyone knows what it was called or if it is still active, please share a link or something.
It was by an independent developer, I think it started as a school project or something. You logged into the server along with other players in a persistent world. Graphics were pretty basic but it was a fairly big map to explore. There was hunger and thirst so you had to either find resources or get to a town (created by players) to get food and water. Players could work for other players and get paid in gold, build mines to get their own gold, farm, bake bread, build and run banks and supply stores and such. All completely player-run. You could stay as a member of the first town you find or you could save the resources to go start another town for players to join. Very basic but it was essentially a town builder, player run economy. The current game had a time limit and the player with the top earning/community leader would be recognized and you could carry over some resources and buildings to the next "age"/server reset. I remember that there was a forum and a chat feature so that you could find other players, make deals, and work cooperatively. I think I played around 2007-2012? Just cannot remember what it was called.
Someone in the original thread replied that it sounds like Tibia, but that isn't it. This was a 3d world, 3rd person pov if I remember.

By "time limit" I mean the game cycle would run for several weeks, different by server, and then the age would end/reset. Players that built a marble monument or temple were able to carry that over into the next age/cycle while everyone else started again in a loincloth and no resources or buildings. These special buildings took a lot of resources and gold to build and many times the age would end with no one having achieved this, but high scores or wealth stats were posted on the game webpage.

sounds like it might've been A Tale in the Desert, which I admit to not knowing much about.
late edit: wait, I'm the one who suggested Tibia back then? That's embarrassing... even more embarrassing if I'm wrong this time, too.

That (A tale in the Desert) looks A LOT like the game I played...maybe it's something that used the same concepts and models. in fact, the more I look at the site, I think it IS what may have evolved from what I played! Holy guacamole! We've got chips!!! Thank you @cause a commotion!!!

Bump...still haven't found or heard anything. Many games like it have been suggested. This was seriously like a guy was running the server when he wasn't busy with college and it was a really simple game. Like the fun was how simple yet hard it was at the same time. Very pixelated but fairly large map. Often players would split once a town was established and go off and build a new town somewhere but resources were super hard to find although you could build a gold mine anywhere. Players could only build 2 or 3 structures each so it was strategic who focused on what jobs for the town.
