In most video games the player is always going to be a protagonist. That’s a formula that carries on to this day. However there are rare instances where you get to play as the antagonists, which changes the formula. Here are a couple of examples:

  • In the PC and PS1 game “Beast Wars: Transformers”, you have the options to play as the protagonists being the Maximals, or as the antagonists which are the Predacons.
  • In the Command and Conquer series you can play as the protagonist GDI or Allies, or you can play as the antagonist NOD or Soviets. Mind you the perspective of protagonist and antagonist changes due to beliefs and principles of a side. When it comes to Red Alert 2, Yuri’s faction is a playable antagonist in the mix. Same May apply to the Empire of the Rising Sun in Red Alert 3, and the Scrin in Tiberium Wars.
  • In the Wonderswan game “Time Bokan Series: Bokan Densetsu: Buta mo Odaterya Doronbgō”, you always play as the antagonistic Doronbo Gang (confirmed by the manga)

Entries to this group may require confirmation on who is an antagonist and how. You might assume their alignment is always evil. I wonder what it would be like to play a Pokémon game with the role of a Team Rocket agent instead of a Pokémon Trainer or Ranger.

"Bruce Lee" on Atari, the second player could play the fat Bruce Lee's enemy before Bruce entered the dungeon.

It's not even that rare. All RTSes, TBSes, fighting games... Many RPGs allow you to have a separate evil run (Sacred 2, Baldur's Gate 3...). We might need some criteria.
