Description official description

Wibarm is an action game with RPG elements, and several gameplay modes. The player controls a robot who can also transform into a tank or a flying spacecraft; each form has its own strengths and weaknesses. Similarly to Thexder, the player guides the transformable robot through side-scrolling levels, shooting at enemies and trying to stay alive. However, when the robot enters a building, the game transforms into one of the earlier examples of a 3D, third-person perspective shooter. The levels culminate in boss battles, which take place on separate top-down areas.

The player is given a considerable freedom as to which locations to visit first. Collecting power units increases the robot's power. If a particular boss encounter proves to be too difficult, the player can explore other areas, level up, and return to the boss stronger than before, giving the game an RPG angle.

Sci-fi Anime RPG, early polygon 3D, great character development

The Good
A really fun character development component, multiple weapons, nice graphics, early polygonal 3D while indoors, auto-mapping (wasn't very common at that time), and the fact that you can transform into 3 types of robots.

The Bad
Not well known. Gameplay isn't super deep compared to other RPGs/JRPGs, so it might not go as far for the hardcore RPGers out there.

The Bottom Line
Really fun game IMHO. You start as a weak robot and slowly gain power by gaining power units (robots xp). There are several large places to travel in, each contains 10 or so buildings to explore. You can actually get inside every building and try to explore it, although you'll probably get blocked by a tough monster - until you get strong enough to beat it. You have 3 kinds of weapons to choose from, and you can find upgrades while exploring. You can also transform into a spacecraft, hovercraft or a robot, each has its own unique benefits. Storyline is probably a weak spot here, but I think overall it's a really fun game that's worth trying.
