Warlords II
Description official description
Warlords II is a 2D turn-based strategy game set in a fantasy world. The player is a commander from one of several races (like the people from the Kingdoms, the Dark Elves, Ussyrian Orcs, Sirians etc.). The player starts with one city, and must capture other cities (enemy or neutral) to produce new units. The creation of a new unit itself takes a certain amount of turns. The player organizes warriors into "armies" (groups of units, shown as one icon on the map, like the heroes in the Heroes of Might and Magic series) and lead them into battles. The units differ in the number of movement points they possess, but the armies are only as fast as the slowest unit in them. Battles are resolved automatically, the player cannot affect them.

All time classic - fantastic gameplay, quality graphics for its time and Australian.
The Good
The swag of different units, the awesome soundtrack, the increase in the heroes abilities and bonuses as time goes on and the detail in the scenarios. The terrain movement bonuses of the various units makes forces you to combine strength and movement in a stack of armies. The AI was also quite astute. And did I mention the soundtrack??
The names of the kingdoms were great, especially the Balad Naran - curse their evil hides!
The Bad
The main downer about Warlords II is the combat - a pure simulation, where you often get ridiculous outcomes like a dragon getting flamed by a light infantry, or even a scout.
The diplomacy function never really worked all that well - you pretty much always ended up as running dog, and the fact that allies could not combine armies.
The Bottom Line
Stupidly addictive - really, after getting sick of other games, for years I turned back to Warlords II until it wouldn't work on the new computer...

Trivia
Editor
Maps created with the Warlords II Scenario Builder can be used with the base version of Warlords II when updated to version 1.11 first. The patch (~900 KB) also improves some game features and adds two new terrain types for random maps: Ice World and Mudflats.
