Description

uin is an experimental mystery game by the creator of the La La Land series, entirely in grayscale. Similar to Seiklus and Painajainen, it is largely a platform game where many puzzles need to be solved. The story, the goals and the controls remain vague. The game starts in a room with two characters. One is fed up being followed around by the other and announces to go to work, stepping into a cupboard. The player controls the other character, who decides to follow him. Once through the cupboard there is no way back and the character ends up in a strange world.

The player can move the character around and make him jump. Enemies can be taken out by shooting dark orbs. Initially only nine are available and it takes some time to recharge (using a key press), leaving the character vulnerable. Additional skills are discovered later on, such as pushing items or digging for treasure. No clear goal is specified, but pressing the space bar brings up a list of animals with question marks. They represent the different species of enemies that can be encountered throughout the game. For each species a specific number of enemies need to be killed to get it crossed off the list. Sometimes this is needed to acquire a certain ability or to progress. When the target has been met, that type of enemy never spawns again.

Various unusual locations can be visited. There are triggers that alter the world and provide a checkpoint, chests that lead to new locations, friendly characters that provide tasks, and side quests such as digging for coins to buy treasure maps. The character has five health bars and when these run out he ends up at a new place where the game can be continued. Various elements in that limbo area change according to the game progress, by presenting defeated enemies or activating lights on a large door. There is also a special option in the main menu that is opened up when specific conditions are met.
