Description official descriptions

Welcome to the Klingon Language Immersion holodeck program. You will be guided by Gowron (his hologram, actually) in this true immersive experience in the Klingon culture. You will participate as Pok, a young Klingon about to take his Rite of Ascension. You start at home getting ready to entertain guests of your father. Be ready to participate in this interactive adventure, so you can truly experience what it feels to be a Klingon.

Klingon is basically a full-motion video click-your-own-adventure. At certain points in the game, you will be given a few seconds to make a decision on what to do. You perform action by clicking on the object onscreen, or do nothing (which is sometimes appropriate). Make the right choice, and the game continues. Make the wrong choice, and Gowron scolds you for not learning, and gives you another chance as the program was "rewound" back to that decision point.

The game also comes packaged with a Klingon Language Lab, which helps to teach you about the Klingon language, complete with speech recognition to correct your Klingon pronunciation.

Nice episode, but way too short, and way too easy!

The Good
ST:K has good production value. It is filmed with full make-up and sets, just like a real Star Trek episode. The story is all Klingon, with all the proper Klingon cultural references that one must be a Star Trek fan to appreciate. The language lab with speed recognition is just icing on the cake (if it works!).

The Bad
The game is way too short. You can finish it in an hour. The interaction is limited to a click (or lack of one ) at decision points, and there are only 19 of them in the whole game. The video (designed for 486) is so blurry that you can barely recognize some of the items on the screen. Some of the puzzles makes no sense.

The Bottom Line
Star Trek: Klingon is an interactive movie, where you get to make a few decisions and watch some more video. The productions values are excellent as it was done by the regular Star Trek crew. The compression standard back then was blurry but acceptable, as you get to know all things Klingon. Of course, they speak Federation Standard for your sake. This is supposed to be a holodeck simulation, after all. The interaction is really minimal, as it involves a click here and there. With only nineteen decision points you'll be done in about one hour. It's extremely short. Some of the puzzle is incredibly hard with almost no clue given. Most decision points give you unlimited retries, but Gowron may get mad if you mess it up several times. :-) When you get done, you may be worthy of his blade. :-)

On the other hand, the language lab, which contains Klingon culture and language references, including pronunciation guide, is a good reference... If you can get it to work. It doesn't work under WIN98, as the install program, written for WIN31, keeps wanting to install Video for Windows 1.1 and the old stuff. Even with that stuff it doesn't work.
