Description

In The Simpsons Skateboarding, players take the four members of the Simpsons family plus Otto, Chief Wiggum, Professor Frink, Nelson and Krusty the Clown to ten skating locations around Springfield.

Gameplay is similar to the Tony Hawk series, though the trick system is slightly different with some moves involving Street-Fighteresque quarter rolls of the d-pad.

Each level has three kinds of objectives. Skillz school mode has challenges that involve doing specific tricks. There are five untimed goals and a final timed goal in each level. At first it serves as a tutorial of sorts, but it gets difficult later on.

In skatefest, players are assigned five goals per level. Each level has one goal where you spell a word, one where you collect items, one where you find clocks in something similar to a checkpoint race and two miscellaneous goals.

The final mode is a timed trick contest mode, where the objective is to get a given score within a time limit.

All of these modes earn money, which is used to upgrade the characters' skating abilities. There are also various secret items to find or to unlock by completing objectives.

Makes Even the Most Devoted of Simpsons Fans Cringe

The Good
One of the most crucial saving graces (at least for every Simpsons game from The Simpsons: Wrestling onwards) was getting the cast to voice the characters, yet sadly, this isn't enough to salvage this game.

If you're a fan of The Simpsons Wrestling and if you want to avoid getting heckled over it, bring up this game and you should be left alone.

The Bad
While the cast did lend their voices to the characters, a bulk of the dialogue sounds like it was ripped directly from The Simpsons: Road Rage. Not even the new dialogue is good enough, as most of it is Kent Brockman stating what moves the player does as well as acknowledging a player crashing or falling.

The graphics are ugly and choppy, preventing the game from blending in with the rest of the PS2's entire catalog. At least with The Simpsons: Wrestling, the developers were trying to capture the proper look of the show.

The music is generic, and often obnoxious.

The game's greatest offense is its poor control scheme. You use up to move, which would be fine. However, the controls tend to delay frequently, leading to very frustrating experiences. In a nutshell, it takes longer to adjust to the controls here than the controls in "Sonic and the Secret Rings",

I honestly wasn't too surprised that the game would turn out like this, especially since the developer, "The Code Monkeys" has been known for releasing various shovelware titles in the past as well as collaborating with a company that's agreeably worse in every regard.

The Bottom Line
Even if you're a true die-hard fan of The Simpsons, you'd have a horrible time with this game. You'd might as well stick with The Simpsons: Wrestling if you want a bad game that's actually enjoyable.
