LV-426
Description
LV-426 is a freeware remake of Electric Dreams/Software Studios 1987 game Aliens, and based off of the 1986 movie Aliens. The player directly controls a squad of six marines as they descend into the offworld complex LV-426. Deadly Aliens are loose inside, and the player must cautiously advance each of the six Marines individually as they attempt to find, reach, and kill the Alien Queen.
Players view the action from a "Mobile Command Bay" set up outside the colony. Each Marine has a helmet camera which transmits their view, as well a gun which the player must aim themselves by using the mouse. Status displays show each character's health, stamina, and remaining ammo, as well as if an Alien has entered the same room, or if they are in danger of being captured.
Differences between LV-426 and Aliens include the ability to custom-build the six-man squad using all available characters from the film (each with different stats). Graphics have been redrawn and updated, with the addition of some new effects (like dark rooms with a flashlight that follows the aiming cursor). A minimap is now available to view in-game, and a miniature camera window showing the views of the other uncontrolled characters has been added. This version also uses still images, character portraits, music, and sound effects from the film.
Two player support has also been added, allowing for split-screen co-op play.
LV-426 can be downloaded for free at the author's site.
